There were times during the pandemic that I felt like my mind was racing as fast as today’s technology.  Motherboard is a metaphor to document my thoughts and anxieties during this difficult time which frequently focused on those that I love. Each COVID on the board represents the known infection of someone connected to one of my family members or the loved one themselves.

Young students were not the only ones struggling to transition to distance learning.  According to the National Clearinghouse Research Center, 26.1% of students attending college in 2019 had dropped out by the fall of 2020.  While there are many factors contributing to this statistic, increased feelings of social isolation, anxiety and depression reported by students have clearly had an impact.

Anxiety and depression weren’t the only emotions brought on by the pandemic.  In truth, I was angry.  Angry not just for the freedom that I had lost but for the time and experiences that my teenage daughter had lost.  Together, we made a list of events that she missed and items that she no longer needed because of distance learning.  The burning of these objects is symbolic of her year being up in smoke.

Instead of seeing little bodies bouncing in chairs, teachers were trying to connect with little faces on screens.
In April 2021 I had the opportunity to ZOOM with first grader, Aiden R.  We discussed how he and the rest of his family have been impacted by the pandemic.
